Fie Schouten, born in Amsterdam and still living there, performs in various formations at many different podia and festivals. She has performed in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Italy, France, Spain, England, Estonia, Poland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia. She is playing on all the clarinets with a warm preferation for the low ones.She studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where she received her Bachelor Diplomas in clarinet and bassclarinet and a Masters Degree in bassclarinet with Harry Sparnaay, Tom Sieuwerts, and Herman Braune. She has participated in masterclasses in Austria (Impuls, Summer Course for Contemporary Music) and Germany (Darmstadt Festival for New Music 2000/2002), where she had lessons with clarinettist Ernesto Molinari.
As a specialist in performing new music, she can be heard extensively with her own ensembles To be Sung (trio), in duo with accordeonist Marko Kassl, reed-trio Kassandra, Kaida (duo).
Many new pieces are written for and premiered by these groups by composers with very diverse styles and of very different backgrounds and nationalities. Free improvisation appears in many of the pieces.Numerous of these performances have been broadcast by the 'Concertzender'. Kaida received the Tera de Marez Oyens Prijs in 2002 (NL). It won prize for best impro at the International Gaudeamus Competition (NL'03), best windensemble at 13th International Chambermusic Competition Illzach (F'03).
CD 'Of Villages and Spaces' 2005 (KAIDA) and CD 'Amsterdam, de wereld' 2007 (To be Sung) came out at Karnatic Lab Records.
Apart from these smaller formations, Fie is playing in larger ensembles as well: as a member of Axyz Ensemble, permanent guest musician in Orkest de Volharding, and the gamalan Ensemble Multifoon.
She has played in orchestras including Holland Symfonia, the Ensemble Modern Orchester, Klangforum Wien, Radio Symphony Orchestra and ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble, musikFabrik. As a soloist Fie performed with ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble (NL) in 'Michaels Reise um die Erde' by K. Stockhausen.
